It's time for a trophy cabinet!

Young Bristol held its annual volunteer awards last month and BREAD triumphed in two categories.

Three young people from the BREAD Infomates' project, Connor MacAllister, Jordan Hodgkinson and Lucy Sullivan, were shortlisted for the Overcoming Adversity award, with Connor announced as the overall winner.

BREAD staff Natalie Dolton and Janene Gray were nominated for the Supporting Volunteers award which we are pleased to report that they won!

Well done to all involved and thanks to Young Bristol for organising such a great event.

TeachBot comes to BREAD

BREAD is delighted to have been invited to use a new piece of interactive software for improving young people's literacy, developed by Bristol-based company Elzware.

TeachBot is an interactive teaching tool that helps young people with all areas of literacy, including grammar, structure and content.  Accessed online, a user types in a question, which TeachBot then answers.  It has been created by educational experts and backed by Bristol City Learning Centres, and is tailored to fit GCSE course requirements including Functional Literacy.

As well as launching TeachBot in school environments, Elzware was keen to see how it could be used in community-based learning programmes.  TeachBot will be used in BREAD for the next three months, as well as in BREAD's Moving On Up consortium partner organisations.

If you're interested in learning more, you can click here to access the TeachBot site.

Full time volunteer opportunities

We're currently recruiting for full time volunteers (25 hours per week) aged between 16 and 25 to take part in an exciting media project about youth offending.  The project will run between 27th September - 19th December on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Participants will help to create an interactive and creative media resource to help young offenders who have been released from prison.  You'll get training, accreditation and expenses for travel and food.  For more information call or text Becky on 07570 963401 or email beckyw@breadyouthproject.org.uk

What do you think about BREAD?

We're currently conducting surveys to find out what people think about BREAD - and we'd love to have your input.

If you're a young person involved in BREAD, please click on this link - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Q6QQGLJ

If you're a young person who is not already involved in BREAD, please click on this link - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7V6TR2C

Everyone who completes a survey will be entered into a prize draw.  We look forward to hearing from you!

BREAD gets shopped!

BREAD's v project manager, Becky Wood, recently answered an email query from a prospective young volunteer - not realising that the person was in fact a "mystery shopper" who was testing out, on behalf of vinvolved Bristol, how BREAD responded to enquiries.  We are pleased to report that Becky passed with flying colours; the mystery shopper was looking for a timely reply with more information about the role, and the chance to meet up and discuss it further.  Well done Becky!

If you are interested in volunteering and are aged 16-25, please get in touch with Becky on 0117 941 2395 or beckyw@breadyouthproject.org.uk - you can be sure of a prompt response!

Forest of delights

Over the last few months, young people from the Juicy Blitz project have been working on creating an "edible forest" at Lawrence Weston Community Farm.  They celebrated its opening with a family fun day on April 13th.  Activities including badge making, t-shirt printing and face painting.  The event even made the Bristol Evening Post - check out the article online.

Why I respect

This is the final film created by UNITY's "Why I Respect" project.  The film was made by Fairfield School students and supported by UNITY peer educators, Shagia and Oneil.  See the UNITY blog for more information about the project and to see how the film was made.

Rhiannon's an MBE!

BREAD is extremely pleased to announce that one of its trustees, Rhiannon Holder, has been made an MBE by the Queen in the 2010 New Year's Honours List!  This is a fabulous achievement, and made even more special by the fact that Rhiannon is only 22 - and therefore one of the youngest people ever to have been awarded an MBE.  Click here to read the Bristol Evening Post article about Rhiannon.

Rhiannon will be travelling to Windsor Castle to receive her award in March, and will be filmed by BREAD v volunteers as part of a documentary they are making about her achievements.  Watch this space for more info on the finished film.
