Moving On Up
Are you:
-
Aged 13-19?
-
Not enjoying school, or achieving what you want?
-
Not got a job?
-
Not sure what you want to do with your life?
Then Moving On Up could be for you...
Moving On Up is a new programme for young people in Bristol, run by four youth organisations. We aim to help you find out what you want to do with your life.
If you take part in Moving on Up, you can get involved with activities such as:
-
Sports: canoeing, climbing, football, basketball
-
Arts activities: circus skills, music, drawing, sculpture, dance, photography
-
Independent living skills: cooking, budgeting, CV writing, job searching
-
Volunteering: working in the community in a variety of ways
-
Peer education opportunities: train to help other young people explore the issues in their lives whilst having fun
Moving On Up will also help you with your reading, writing and maths skills, if you feel they need brushing up a little.
Through being involved in these activities, you can gain certificates as well, such as an ASDAN award or various Levels in English and Maths. These can help you towards going to college or getting a job.
How do I get involved in Moving On Up?
You can either be referred onto Moving On Up through an organisation you're involved with (such as Connexions or your school) or through self-referral.
Get in touch with Helen, the Moving On Up co-ordinator, say you're interested in being involved in Moving on Up, and we'll take it from there.
What happens after I've taken part in Moving On Up?
After taking part, we hope that the programme will have given you the skills and abilities you need to move onto the next stage in your life, whether that's education, employment or training. Ultimately we will support you to feel good about your future. We'll be here to support you in the decisions you make, and we'll keep in touch to see how you're getting on.
If you've enjoyed your experience, you'll have the opportunity to train as a peer educator so you can work with other young people entering the programme.
The partners in Moving On Up are BREAD, Fairbridge West, the Kingswood Foundation and Youth Education Service.
You can read more about what BREAD gets up to on this website.
Fairbridge West believes that every young person has potential, however challenging their lives. We think differently - we're a bit quirky and we'll try anything. And we love having fun! We run lots of courses in different arts and sports activities, organise residential trips to different parts of the country, and we even have our own tall ship that young people have the chance to sail.
The Kingswood Foundation offers young people the chance to take part in fun and inspiring activities such as circus skills, music, graffiti, photography and dance, run from a unique site in East Bristol. You'll work with skilled professionals and other young people, and have the opportunity to develop your own performances and exhibitions, enabling you to express yourself and the issues importance to you.
Youth Education Service (YES) provides opportunities for young people to develop Maths, English and other key skills in a supportive and friendly environment. We offer a personal, individual and accessible service - non-authoritarian, "non-academic" and non-judgemental.
